You can tell in this album that nice Mr. Kweli is pissed off.  Modern Hip-Hop music has succumb to something close to mental retardation with its primitive emphasis on hoes, money, cars, and power.  Kweli, in typical fashion, reverses the order of what is truly valuable.  What about the virtues of intelligence, social awareness, political action, and self-cultivation, Kweli might ask you? In his single ‘Say Something’ this peaceful MC ‘baskes in confrontation’ by targeting the typical top 8.  Those top 8 that we see all day in videos and magazines are not preserving the art of Hip-Hop, they are making a mockery of it.  In this album we have the proletariat attacking the corporate Bourgeoisie with the fury of Mao-Tse Tung.  As Mohammed claimed Mecca, so Kweli claims the artistic and intelligent side of Hip-Hop as his sacred land.  But what of its philosophy?  Kweli reminds me of a gentle Malcolm X who wishes to, in Socratic method, convince his listeners through reason that their values are confused.  Education, in this worldview, is central.  If we only open our eyes and educate ourselves we will see the injustice around us and take action.  Education leads to conversion.  John Dewey and Martin Luther King Jr. would be proud of this record, although Dewey might be frightened by its beats.
